About Cecile Derel:
Cecile Derel grew up in Chicago, IL where she currently lives and maintains her studio practice. Cecile’s love affair with glass started with a stained glass class in 1999 and has grown over the years to include other glass mediums. In 2013, she began glass engraving using the drill technique and in 2017 took her first wheel engraving class. Inspired by the beauty and amazing variety of creatures found in nature, Cecile’s artwork is largely focused on animals, sea life and plants. She uses the fragility, colors and luminescent qualities of glass to capture and reflect upon the delicate nature of the world around us. This inspiration has resulted in work ranging from a 3-dimensional stained glass sculpture of a sea snail called a pteropod to crystal paperweights engraved with images of microscopic aquatic crustaceans. Her interests in Celtic knotwork and the artistic movements and designs of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods also influence and shape her work. In a direct extension of her glass engravings, Cecile also uses her engraved glass plates for printmaking in a process called vitreography. Cecile received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012, and has exhibited locally and nationally. She is a member of the Glass Art Society, the Stained Glass Association of America, the Guild of Glass Engravers, and the Chicago Art Deco Society. |
