OPEN CALLS:
Soundscapes - Visualizing the Healing Sounds of Nature
Application Deadline: October 16, 2023
Eligibility: Open to all military personnel, military veterans and former and current participants in Brushwood’s At Ease program.
Exhibition Dates: November 5-26, 2023
Location: Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods, 21850 N. Riverwoods Rd., Riverwoods, IL 60015
About the Exhibition:
Since 2015, Brushwood has worked with Service Members, Military Veterans and their families in our At Ease initiative. Through this innovative series of nature and art based workshops, we address the special stresses, traumas and challenges faced by the military community and work on increasing their sense of well-being. This year, our At Ease workshops have paid special attention to how sounds – both natural and human made – can be healing forces. Soothing and rejuvenating sounds such as calming music, the rustle of leaves or the chirping of birds can have a profound impact on our well-being, offering a sense of tranquility, solace, and healing. In this companion exhibition to our workshops, we will explore this idea further with artwork that visually interprets and conveys artists’ personal experiences and emotional responses to these healing sounds.
Artistic Interpretations:
We welcome a wide range of artwork, including but not limited to paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, mixed media, and digital art. Artists are encouraged to explore various aspects of soundscapes in their works, from the serene and peaceful to the vibrant and dynamic. Submitted artwork MUST IN SOME WAY BE RELATED TO NATURE AND/OR HEALING SOUNDS (subject matter, materials used, function, etc.), but we encourage a wide range of styles, media and interpretations of that theme.
Submission Guidelines:
Eligibility: This exhibition is exclusively open to military personnel, veterans, and current and former participants in Brushwood’s At Ease program.
Artwork: Submissions can be in any visual medium, but should be suitable for display in a gallery setting. Each artist may submit up to 3 pieces.
Artwork Details: Please include a brief description (maximum 200 words) for each artwork, explaining how it relates to the theme of healing sounds of nature.
Submission Fee: There is no submission fee for this exhibition.
Sales: Artists may decide whether or not to offer their artwork for sale, and what price to set. If a piece of artwork does sell, the artist will retain 85% of the sale price.
