About Flat Rock Studio:
Seminally, Flat Rock Studio was born in 1959 when Gary, as a student in his midwest high school woodshop class produced two hand hewn ‘pump’ lamps. Later in a metal shop class he made a welded lamp which he attached to one of his dads wooden duck decoys and mounted it to a wooden base. In 1966, upon graduation from the University of Nebraska with a BFA in Education, Gary moved to suburban Chicago to teach high school art. Again lighting reared its delightful head where as part of many sculptures, a floor lamp was born of welded steel and carved limestone. One Masters degree (MA in Art Education), and thirty-five years later he retired to establish Flat Rock Studio in order to pursue his creative passion of working three-dimensionally in a variety of earth media; clay, wood and stone. Gary and his wife, Pam live in Skokie, IL much too far from their eight grandchildren. In 2017, while wandering through a specialty store in Santa Cruz, CA, Gary discovered a book on hand carving spoons from green wood which became the genesis of his current venture in creativity. These Flat Rock Studio cooking and serving spoons are the result. Each one of a kind spoon is meticulously carved by hand from a wide variety of woods from trees which have been pruned or cut by tree experts primarily in Illinois, Wisconsin and California or wherever he may roam. flatrockstudio@sbcglobal.net |
