About Barb Kirpluk:

I am endlessly fascinated by animals, birds, and nature. I believe direct observation is the cornerstone of developing a painter’s eye. I paint en plein air as often as I can (many times at Ryerson.) Although live subjects are fleeting, I find painting landscapes from life sharpens my sense of color choice, and also provides memories of atmospheric conditions upon which to base studio works. I credit three of my favorite artists for starting me down this path, James Gurney, Marco Bucci, and Aaron Blaise. Today, excellent art education is available through the generosity of professional artists who give their time and expertise on YouTube for free. I take advantage of this every day.
I work primarily in oils and acrylics. I have also studied digital painting, and feel my forays into this medium helped loosen up my traditional painting style. Since there are no materials to “waste” in a digital work, it allowed me to experiment without fear of muddying color, or destroying a canvas. For the Holiday Market I am presenting a celebration of urban birds. These are the cheery little fellows we so often see in our own backyards. While not the most exotic or rare, I feel they deserve tribute for the joy they bring to the average nature lover.
