About Cecile Derel:

I am a Chicago based glass artist working predominately in stained glass and glass engraving. My love affair with glass art started with my first stained glass class in 1999. Since then, I have taken other types of glass art classes and in 2013, I taught myself glass engraving using the drill technique. As a glass engraver, I use a hand held rotary tool and small diamond and rubber bits to carve my images into the glass.
For this show, I am offering my monoprints known as vitreographs. Vitreography is a printmaking technique where prints are hand pulled from glass instead of a wood or stone matrix. The glass is deeply engraved, allowing the vitreograph to pick up the texture and depth of the engraving, which then results in an embossed area on the print. The engraved glass plate is re-inked between each print, sometimes with the addition of hand applied paint, resulting in individual prints where no two are alike.
My love of animals and sea life influences my work and inspires me to use glass as a way to reflect their delicate nature. The vitreographs are a direct extension of my glass engravings and another way to express my love of art and glass.
Visit the In Person Sale at Brushwood Center on December 4th and 5th for exclusive items and discounts from this artist and others.
