Environmental Graphiti™: Explore the Art. Learn the Science. Inquire.
Opening Reception and Field Museum Climate Talk
Sunday, June 11, 2017

Picture
Attracted by the inherently aesthetic design elements of scientific charts and graphs, artist and climate activist Alisa Singer became intrigued by the idea of turning them into art. What resulted is a collection of vibrant digital paintings on metal that use graphs, charts, maps, words, or numbers relating to a key fact about climate change as its "blueprint.”

Environmental Graphiti™ delivers a message about climate change in a unique and powerful way. “Art makes the science more accessible. Science makes the art more meaningful. They are a potent combination. Once viewers understand that each piece is derived from a key indicator or fact about climate change, they are intrigued and become more engaged with both the art and the underlying message,” says Singer.

To further enrich the dialogue between art and science that Environmental Graphiti™ has created, Brushwood Center has invited Field Museum Climate Change Ecologist, Dr. Katherine Moore Powell to speak at the opening reception. Dr. Moore Powell has studied the ecology and hydrology of wetlands in Florida, the effect of changing seasonal rain patterns on carbon and water cycling in grasslands in Colorado, and is now developing a climate change adaptation plan for the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Her June 11 talk, The Faces Behind the Graphs, will explore the people behind the research that supports climate change. Although there are decades of research and thousands of publications behind the data that support climate change research, there is usually little known about the people who have worked so hard to study the Earth and its many complex systems. Their stories will parallel the story of climate change, and the inspiration for the art.  It is a story that is perhaps more important now than ever to tell.

Environmental Graphiti™ Opening Reception: Sunday, June 11, 1-3pm
Free. No registration required. Exhibition runs June 11 – July 31, 2017.
