Art Opening & Dear Earth Debut
The Promise of an Acorn In the Chicago region, the people, plants and animals that depend on oaks stretch back centuries. Join these renowned speakers to uncover the cultural and ecological secrets of these critical species and learn how to nourish them into the future. EXHIBITION TALK MODERATED BY: Brooke Hecht is the President of the Center for Humans and Nature. Brooke's work explores the meaning and responsibility of humans in the whole community of life. Brooke's interests are as expansive as her work, including ecology, evolutionary biology, psychology, philosophy, history, and more. HONORED SPEAKERS: Skip Twardosz is a singer and traditional dancer of Potawatomi descent who presents for schools, historical groups, museums, libraries, scout troops and community organizations. Skip is a former member of the Chicago American Indian Center and was Spiritual Elder for Sacred Circle Native Student Organization at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside. He is a historian of native woodland culture. He has functioned as Storyteller, Fire Keeper and Elder for many Native gatherings in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. Gerould Wilhelm is principal botanist and ecologist for Conservation Design Forum and director of research for the Conservation Research Institute. He is also co-author with Laura Rericha of the newly released edition of Flora of the Chicago Region: a Floristic and Ecological Synthesis, which illuminates the 1,800 plus native plant species around Chicago. Gerould is widely known as a foremost botanist, research taxonomist and educator. |

The Promise of an Acorn exhibition focuses not just on the oak itself, but also on the unique habitat it creates, the other species it supports, and its impact on the environment and culture.
Oaks are a keystone species that provide critical food and habitat for more than 600 species and create their own unique ecosystems by affecting the light levels, soil moisture, pH, and types of organic matter found in their surroundings.
