About Karen Bonner:
This show is the perfect venue for my art. I love painting animals, plants, landscapes and all things natural. Many of these paintings are actual “critters” and places I have seen in my travels or in my backyard. With springtime comes the renewal of life and I have pieces that reflect Moms and their babies which are so appropriate for Mother’s Day!
I consider myself a student. I take several art classes year round and always find new techniques, mediums and colors to inspire me. I owe so much of my ability and style to the many instructors who have helped me develop my art over the years here in Northbrook. My husband and I moved here from Cleveland in 2013 to be closer to our two children and four grandchildren. The art community provided a welcoming way to meet people and make friends. |

I usually have a story about my painting. It is either memories about the subject or a new medium I am trying or a new paint like Daniel Smith’s duochrome paint or liquid charcoal. Trying new things is what keeps my art fun and challenging. Sometimes I have used a reference photo from photographers, but that is only with their permission to use the photo for reference and with their permission to sell the painting. I have noted the photographer if this is the case.
The wood pieces are done on basswood with either watercolor or acrylic paints. Sometimes they are mixed. The wood is covered with a polyurethane finish. I especially like the watercolor on wood because the grain of the wood and imperfections of the wood can be seen. The slate pieces are painted in acrylic. A few times I have used light molding paste with the acrylic to make a more three-dimensional look. Sometimes the ridges and contours of the slate add to the painting texture. These pieces are also sprayed with a clear polyurethane finish.
I appreciate your interest in my work.
