About Mary Farmilant

After a 30-year career in nursing, I returned to a childhood passion that I never knew could be an option for me. My photography practice has brought me here. In addition to creating immersive photographic installations, I also create unique abstract designs as wearable art.

I am a woman with a past. I spend a lot of time there. In an effort to break out of that pattern and allow myself to focus on the future, I have taken elements of my photographs, deconstructed them and reassembled them into novel tessellations. The project took on a life of its own as I manipulated fragments of existing images, emphasizing shape and color to explore all the visual possibilities. I ultimately select one design from each of these sketchbooks to print on silk, a fabric with a flowing nature that adapts to the shape it surrounds. The scarves are about the possibilities of light, shape and color, basic ingredients of the visual experience. I have never seen images quite like the ones I am creating. These scarves also bring a new sense of design possibility to the world of fashion. Wearable Art : Function Meets Elegance.
ABOUT THE DESIGNS: Ostinato, comes from the Italian word "obstinate" meaning obstinate or persistent. In music, ostinato is a short melodic phrase or rhythm pattern that is repeated throughout the composition. Each scarf pattern starts with a single photographic image. The image is adjusted and repeated to create a custom design template. This custom template is replicated across the width and length of the fabric. When seen at a distance, the overall pattern is perceived. When seen up close, the details and colors in the pattern can be isolated. These terms refer to the sizes of the scarves. GRANDE is the original collection of large scarves. MEZZO is a new collection of medium sized scarves.
