About Kathleen Warren:

I use painted textiles and thread to create abstract landscapes that help people connect to nature. Being outdoors can help us feel calm and open to beauty. I include colors and textures from nature in my art to remind the viewer that calm and beauty are all around us when we look for it.
My creative process uses painted fabric from deconstructed old shirts, jeans, sari ribbons and raw silk, etc. embellished with hand and machine stitched thread.
First, I use a seam ripper to take apart discarded clothing and fabric as the main source of materials. By taking all the sewing thread out of the garment you are left with holes, strings and ridges to use as texture in my artwork.
Second, I paint the fabric with acrylic paint and use several different mark making techniques like using a roller to spread paint, making lines with the end of my paint brush, spreading paint with a credit card etc. This process creates more texture to the materials.
Finally, I cut the fabric up, sew the pieces together, and add thread embellishment by hand and sewing machine to create abstract landscapes.
In the Great Lakes Region, we have an abundance of natural areas to experience. I selected a few of my favorite ecosystems and created 3 series of art specifically for this Brushwood Holiday Art Sale. The 3 series are Lake Michigan Shore, Fall Forest and Summer Prairie.
