BIRDS IN FOCUS
Keynote Address: David Sibley
Learn all about birds at the 20th Annual Smith Symposium on Saturday, May 3, at the Lake County Forest Preserves’ Ryerson Conservation Area near Deerfield. 2003’s Symposium includes a special Morning Birdwalk with David Allen Sibley, renowned birder, author and artist. A variety of nature workshops are also offered: Bird Banding: Research In Action examines the skills necessary for handling birds and collecting data through interactive discovery while also viewing colorful spring migrants.
Building A Backyard For Birds introduces ways to enhance the beauty of your yard and increase the attractiveness to birds; Drawing Birds allows you to spend the afternoon with other fellow artists and keynote speaker, David Sibley, for hands-on instruction and activity on the art of drawing birds; John James Audubon takes you on a journey of his life and examines the impacts Audubon continues to make even after his arrival to North America 200 years ago; and To Live and Die During Migration investigates the mysteries of migration through advanced technology. |
David Sibley will present Birdwatching in the 21st Century. Sibley is the son of well-known ornithologist, Fred Sibley. A native of upstate New York, David Sibley began drawing birds at age seven. Today he is the author of the fastest-selling bird guide of all time, The Sibley Guide to Birds and its companion piece, The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior.
