 Collaborative Conversations: Anti-Racism & the Environment Youth Cohort

Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods believes in the power of nature and art to heal and nourish communities. However, natural areas, parks and preserves are often not safe or accessible places for BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) communities, due to over-policing, racial profiling within green spaces, institutional bias, and other systemic injustices.

Join Brushwood Center, the Riverwoods Preservation Council, the Lake County Community Foundation, and the Sunrise Movement Chicago Hub for the youth cohort of our Collaborative Conversations virtual workshop series.  The Youth Cohort series will help young people in Lake County:
  • Better understand how racism impacts our society;
  • Understand how racism impacts BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) experiences in the environment;
  • Engage in open, thoughtful dialogue with their peers;
  • Find ways to organize around anti-racism and combat white-supremacy locally.

This series is open to any high school student, and will explore environmental inequity in Lake County and surrounding areas through three, 90-minute workshops hosted via Zoom. The final session of the series will focus on how participants can organize around different local issues to create a more just and equitable place for all.

This series is free of charge, but space is limited to 30 participants. We ask that our registrants commit to attending all three workshops sessions; anti-racism work requires us to go beyond what is convenient, and put real time and effort into creating a more equitable world for everyone.

Workshop Schedule:

February 11 5:00-6:30 PM: Breaking Down Buzzwords & Understanding "Intersectionality"
Moderator Courtney Combs will help us explore how racism impacts our society and environment, and breakdown key terms and concepts that we need to understand to enter into anti-racism work.

February 18 5:00-6:30 PM: Storytelling as a Way of Combatting Racism
The Sunrise Movement's storytelling team will guide us through the process of using storytelling to confront our own biases, and how we can use storytelling to uplift marginalized voices and combat white supremacy.

February 25 5:00-6:30 PM: How to Activate and Organize Through the guidance of organizers at Sunrise and our own group discussions, we will explore how to build our anti-racism practices and move into action beyond this workshop series.

This workshop is presented by Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods, Riverwoods Preservation Council, Lake County Community Foundation, and Sunrise Movement Chicago thanks to support from Healing Illinois, a collaboration between the Illinois Department of Human Services in partnership with The Chicago Community Trust. Healing Illinois is a new and bold statewide initiative to address and heal the harms caused by racism. It is an urgent invitation to everyone to create community centered, inclusive and safe spaces to talk about racial disparities and design local solutions. And, it’s a first step toward the larger mission of fighting poverty and ending racial inequality for all Illinoisans.
