About Hillary Catrow
Hillary Catrow is a Chicago artist whose work explores how humans interact with the natural environment. She views nature as a resource for healing. In this current series, called Smashed, she uses abstract depictions of birds who have met an untimely end after running into unseen human-made obstacles. Instances like these are not uncommon in an urban environment plopped in the middle of one of the largest migration highways in the world. These images, made on paper with ink, watercolor and charcoal, border between cartoonish and gory, inviting the viewer to sit with the subject for a little longer. The artist asks the viewer to be curious about what emotions come up while viewing the smeared lines and splatters and to consider how we can build a safer environment for animals and humans.
In addition to her fine art practice, Catrow is a licensed acupuncturist who specializes in body-based mental health and pain management support at her clinic, Quil Studio. She also creates custom pet sculptures known as Bookeeta Pups. |
